Presentation Topic: “An Update: How large is the Gap now Between the Professional and Academic Worlds”
This special evening will include an opportunity to connect with fellow professionals, enjoy a great meal, and gain insights from Dr. Mora on strengthening the relationship between the professional world and the classroom.
This session delivers a candid perspective from academia on the growing gap between land surveying education and real-world practice—and makes a clear call for industry to step in and help close it.
While universities are working to incorporate advancements such as Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS), LiDAR, and geographic information systems (GIS), the reality is that academic programs cannot fully replicate the pace, complexity, and expectations of today’s surveying environment on their own. The result is a workforce that often requires significant on-the-job training before reaching full productivity.
This is where the profession must take ownership.
Attendees—especially industry leaders and practitioners—will be challenged to play a more active role in shaping the next generation of surveyors. Whether through internships, mentorship, guest instruction, equipment support, or direct collaboration with universities, meaningful progress depends on consistent industry involvement.
The message is simple: if the gap exists, the profession has the power—and the responsibility—to close it. This session will outline practical ways to get involved and demonstrate how even small commitments can lead to stronger graduates, more capable teams, and a more resilient future for the land surveying profession.
We encourage all members and guests to attend for an evening of networking, professional insight, and a great meal.. All are welcome!
